How to Order Food in English
Ordering food in English becomes easier when you learn the entire sequence: get a table, ask about the menu, state dietary needs, order clearly, respond to follow-up questions, request something during the meal, and pay. Politeness comes from tone and flexible phrases such as Could I …?, not from making every sentence long.
The restaurant sequence
- Ask for a table and mention the party size.
- Request time or ask for a recommendation.
- Check ingredients and allergies clearly.
- Order with I'd like or Could I get.
- Answer choices such as sides, doneness, or drinks.
- Ask for anything missing.
- Request the check and confirm payment.
A complete order
Server: Hi. Are you ready to order?
Guest: Almost. Does the curry contain peanuts?
Server: No peanuts, but it contains coconut milk.
Guest: That's fine. Could I get the curry with rice, please?
Server: Of course. Would you like it mild or spicy?
Guest: Mild, please. And could I have some tap water?

Safety note
For a serious allergy, name the allergen directly and ask about cross-contact. Do not rely only on phrases such as “I can't eat it,” which may sound like a preference rather than a medical need.
